Puerto Rico: A Wealth Of Things To See & Do

Puerto Rico has a wealth of interesting attractions. The following are just a few of the many things you can see and do on this interesting island.

San Juan

Located along the northern coast of Puerto Rico is the capital, San Juan. Founded in 1521, San Juan is a city of contrasts; the colonial old city, wonderful city beaches. high rises, and modern shopping areas. Put all of the elements together, and you easily have one of the nicest cities found anywhere in Latin America.

San Juan is a great jumping off point for other sites of interest within Puerto Rico. Due to the small size of the island, virtually everything is within just a few hours drive.

Ponce

Ponce, "La Perla del Sur" is the second largest city in Puerto Rico. The city was founded in 1692 and named after Ponce de Leon. The heart of the city is a historic treasure full of many old Spanish colonial style buildings, fantastic fountains, and impressive plazas. The city is home to some interesting museums such as the Ponce Museum of Art, the Museum of the History of Ponce, and the every popular Puerto Rican Music Museum. These museums have helped to cement the city's reputations as a center of culture in the region.

El Yunque

The US National Park Service has just one rainforest under its protection and that one is El Yunque. Today this park is made up of almost 30,000 acres of rainforest, trails, unique plant and animal life, plus more. If you have never visited a rainforest, El Yunque is a must see stop when in Puerto Rico. Stop by the El Portal Tropical Forest Center for detailed info about the make up of a rainforest. The park is located less than an hour away from San Juan.

San Germán

If you want to visit a quaint little town, stop by San German. After San Juan, this town is the oldest in Puerto Rico. Most people come to stroll the quiet streets and enjoy the beauty of the town. It is a nice break from the hustle and bustle of San Juan.

Another reason to stop by this town is due to the fact that it is close to Phosphorescent Bay and Boqueron Beach. Both are great places to visit.

Arecibo Observatory

This observatory is the largest radio telescope found anywhere in the world. Currently the site is run by Cornell University. The observatory has a great interactive space museum.
