Puerto Rico: Cultural

Puerto Rico is a small island located in the Caribbean. If you were to compare it to a state in the US, Puerto Rico is approximately the same size as Connecticut.

Don't let the small size fool you however, Puerto Rico is rich in culture and history. Most visitors will find Puerto Rico and its friendly 4 million inhabitants to be very interesting.

The first major influence culturally on Puerto Rico was the Taino culture. However the culture today in Puerto Rico is as a direct result of the Spanish. During the Spanish colonial period, the Spanish put the local tainos to work. Unfortunately due to conditions and disease many died. To shore up the work force, the Spanish began to import African slaves.

Over the centuries, this combination of Taino, Spanish and African influences has created the culture of Puerto Rico today. This mix of different cultures is felt in all aspects of Puerto Rican life: food, traditions, festivals, language, and much more.

This mix of peoples and cultures has helped to make Puerto Rico a special place to visit.
