Spanish In Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico: World
Class Food
If you have never had Puerto Rican food you
will be very pleasantly surprised. It seems that no matter
where you go and what you try the food is excellent. The style
of food seems to be a mix of both Spanish and Mexican foods.
The great food is in large part due to the
freshness of the food. Much of the food used is produced in
the lush growing regions of the island. Bit into to a piece
of fruit and you will know what we mean.
Much of what makes the food taste so great
in Puerto Rico is the type of seasonings used. Common ingredients
used include peppers, garlic, coriander, oregano, cinnamon
and cloves. Various combinations of these ingredients seem
to be used in every dish! Tasty!
Rice is a common part of the local dishes
in Puerto Rico. As such Puerto Ricans have come up with a
variety of ways to prepare the rice. Beans, vega tables, or
different spices can and are added to the rice to provide
unique flavors.
If you like soups, then you will enjoy your
stay in Puerto Rico. Soups are very popular either as more
of an appetizer or as the main course itself. Some of the
more well known soups are sopon de pollo con arroz, sopon
de garbanzos con patas de cerdo, and sopon de pescado.
A very traditional dish is the asopao, which
is similar to a gumbo and is typically made with chicken or
fish. It seems that every Puerto Rican has their own recipe
for this classic.
Some other traditional dishes you will encounter
are carne frita con cebolla (fried beef with onion), ternera
(veal) a la parmesana, and roasted leg of pork. Each of these
dishes are cooked in the creole style and typically flavored
with adobo.

in many dishes. The most popular variation would be arroz
con pollo (chicken and rice).
